Question:
Go through the index of genres in the BBG. Choose a genre you are familiar with and write about the following:
1. A description of the genre itself in your own words
2. A description of your idea of the purpose and audience of the genre--try to be as specific as possible. An audience of "people who are interested in...." is not specific enough.
3. A specific example of that genre -- again, be specific. I mean title, weblink, photograph, etc.
My Response:
1) For this assignment, I chose the photo-essay genre. This genre refers to any picture (or a set of pictures) that, when combined, are used to tell a story or display some sort of emotion. Photo-essays are also often accompanied with a small amount of text to support the image
2) The purpose of a photo essay is to visually communicate a narrative that will evoke powerful emotions in the viewer. They purposefully display the argument in an honorable light that brings the subject to life. Although the audience will differ by topic, people who are passionate about the the matter, and want to develop a stronger bond will connect with the images. For example, if a photo essay is geared towards children, the images must reflect activities kids would enjoy, find interest in, and have vibrant and appealing colors.
